Thursday night football is a wonderful thing.......
The riders strolled into Vancouver and left with their second road win of the year......
How significant was the victory last night? Well...BC has not lost since last October...and hasn't lost at home in over a year......July 24, 2006 in fact..and to none other than the green and white.....
Sure the lions had excuses.....3rd string starting.....a injured defense.....a short week to prepare...but the fact is in the CFL its extremely tough to win on the road.........and give the riders credit where credit is due...they walked in and only trailed at one point ....1-0.......they never trailed again winning 21-9 in a game that defense reigned high..yet again.......
The win last night also kept the riders right on pace with the lions for tops in the west and started to give them some separation from the rest of the pack.....
As for my thoughts on the game........
Ball Control.....we owned the clock in this game....by almost 11 minutes......keeping the stars from BC's offense off the field is key.......
Turnovers....7 against the first time they met...and just one last night....a major factor...
Defense....Our DB's are ball hawks....Justin and Johnson...wow....these guys are new and look like vets......I was extremely worried when Eddie Davis when down but Frazier has come in nicely and played excellent.....
Our front Seven....they didn't have a lot of pressure last night..but they didn't let BC move the ball on the ground.....when you can shut down the leagues best running back to 12 yards in 3 quarters your doing your job......Joe Smith was a non factor last night and the leagues best against the run proved that last night.......props to Scott Schultz...he was a monster last night.....best game of the year for him.....
Secondly I loved the balls getting batted down...I've noticed it a lot over the last few games and its nice to see......
Offense......KJ...other than one bad toss that was picked....he played great...he got rid of the ball when he had nothing and made great throws.....What can you say about the guy...he just seems to get better every game.......
Our use of play action is great....KJ on the play action bootleg is a thing of beauty.........
Wes Cates......unreal..this guy is becoming a star very quickly......I have already forgotten about Kenton Keith.....
Calgary getting rid of him is the biggest blunder of the year....
Matty D does nothing but make huge plays and get YAC yards......2 times KJ threw perfect passes to him in double coverage and he came down with the ball....
Overall the offense played good....I have little to complain about ..
Special Teams.....Conji struggled a bit..but made two big time field goals.....I still feel like we lost the field position game...as we gave BC great field position all night.....that has to change..........
Other than the Smart return on the missed field goal I thought our down field coverage was pretty spot on....
At 4-2 this team is looking up....the toughest part of the schedule is done and we are in great shape....its time to sit back folks and enjoy what truly might be a season to remember.......
